Fun Friday

It was a great day for blowing bubbles!  That's what we did for Fun Friday!  It was also an activity that went along with our new science unit - force and motion.  We got to experiment with how fast or slow we blew to make the bubbles come out of our bubble wands!  Some of us had a lot of fun catching and popping bubbles, too!

Yesterday we read and talked about the houses that the Three Little Pigs built.  Then, we pretended to be "Big, Bad Wolves" and tried blowing on blocks, Popsicle sticks, and strips of paper (for hay/straw) through drinking straws to see if we could make the objects move by pushing air onto them.  The students got really creative with this and tried different surfaces and other objects in our classroom!  We discovered that we had some strong air in us!!!

Seed Art

Since we have been learning about seeds and plants, we decided to use some seeds to make an art project.  We used seeds and designed amazing pieces of artwork that are now hanging in our hallway! Mrs. Bickel couldn't believe how creative we were with our seeds!

Plant Experiments/Fun Friday

Our predictions were correct!  The carnations and celery stalks DID change colors just like we predicted!  They were so fun to watch change colors each day this week!

For Fun Friday today "Miss Sweet Corn" came and read to us!  The book she read to us was called "Tops and Bottoms" by Janet Stevens.  The characters in this book planted different foods in their gardens.  This was a great book to have read aloud to us since we are learning about plants!

Our "Trash Creations"

We had so much fun creating new things today from all of he "trash" we collected in our classroom!  We worked so hard and were so focused the entire time we worked!  Check out our creations below!

We were so engaged and focused while making our creations!

A castle

A rocket for Lego men.

A camera

A pencil holder

A T-Rex (the green lid can open and shut like a mouth)

A loader for construction workers

A creation to use for sorting Legos - each container can hold a different color of Lego

A toy

A car that can flip over

A birdhouse with a container inside to hold birdseed

An instrument - you can hit the sides like a drum

Binoculars

A tornado-in-a-bottle

A watering jug for my grandma's flowers

A superhero house - it can catch bad guys

A machine

A creation that you can put marbles in and they go down the tubes

After we cleaned up, we took the leftover cardboard and plastic trash outside and sorted it into the recycling containers.

Trash Day!

April 22nd is Earth Day.  We have been collecting "trash" in our classroom to use for an Earth Day project this week.  Today, we sorted our trash collection and we were really fast at it!  We will begin our projects tomorrow using all of the recycling items we brought to school.  Look for pictures of our projects to come soon!

Our Plants

Our "grass heads" have started growing!  Most of hem have a few pieces of grass growing now.  We will see how much "hair" they grow by next week!

Our basil plants have started growing, too!

Unfortunately, not all of our lima bean seeds grew.  We had some seeds, like the one pictured below, that have started growing a plant.  Some of us learned that science experiments don't always work.  We think the seeds that didn't grow maybe had too much water in them.

Plant Experiments

Today we put celery stalks and carnations in water.  We then added food coloring and made predictions about what we thought would happen.  We are experimenting with different sizes of celery stalks and carnations, and different amounts of water.  Since we know plants have to drink, we are predicting that the celery stalks and carnations are going to change colors!

Before leaving school today we checked on our experiments.  Look closely and you will see what we saw.  The little "tubes" inside of the celery stalks had carried red water up the celery stalk while we were at school today!  We can't wait to check on our experiments tomorrow!
