Winter Hat Day/Peppermint Experiments

Today was Winter Hat Day at our school!  We sure looked cute in our hats!

We did some experimenting today with peppermint candies and candy canes.  We made predictions about what would happen if we put peppermint candies and candy canes in water.  Our predictions were correct!  We predicted that eventually the red stripes would come off of the candies.  We also predicted that the candies would shrink and they did.  The cool part was watching how the water turned pink after we stirred it up, and watching how the stripes made neat designs in the water as the red stripes were disappearing off of the candies!  Our containers of water smelled good, too, because they smelled like peppermint!

After one hour in water, this it what our candy cane looked like.  We only had half of the candy cane down in the water, that's why the other half looks normal.

Mrs. Bickel blew peppermint scented bubbles after we did our experiments!  We had fun popping them on our classroom!
